Mammoth Wet Collodion Workshop
(Limited to 2 Students)
$1100
July 1-2, 2017

Yige Wang varnishes a 16"x20" (40x50cm) AmbrotypeThis is an intensive, 2 day, hands-on workshop that covers all aspects of making positive Mammoth Wet Plate Collodion images.

Prerequisite: This course is designed for people who experience with the Wet Collodion process.

Demonstrations
Students will get to see the process executed from start to finish and the workflow methodology that Quinn uses for his large work. They will also see how a Mammoth, Ultra Large Format, plate is handled and processed (16”x 20” or 40 x 50cm). Quinn is one of a handful of artists in the world working with this format.

Chemistry
Quinn will teach an in-depth segment on chemistry for ULF/Mammoth Wet Collodion image making. It's slightly different than what's used for smaller plates, and this will be discussed in depth.

Equipment
All of the equipment will be covered - that includes equipment for field work as well as studio work. Quinn will explain the essentials; from beakers to dark boxes, he'll show you everything you need and give you information on the best places to get it.

Plate Making
The students will make mammoth plates on aluminum and glass. Students will have the opportunity to work in both of these substrates if they choose. The second day of the workshop is devoted to plate making which includes preparations, glass cutting, cleaning, etc. pouring plates, sensitizing plates, exposing plates, developing plates, fixing plates and varnishing ULF/Mammoth Wet Collodion images. Students will go home with three (3) ULF plates; two Alumitypes and one Ambrotype.

Critiques & Troubleshooting
At the end of the second day, there will be an overview/critique about the images made. This critique is based on troubleshooting – things that went wrong and things that worked. It’s a very valuable part of the course.

  • You can attend the workshop with nothing but a pen and notebook. Cameras, chemistry, substrate and facilities are all provided.
  • There will be drinks available at the studio (coffee/espresso, water, soft drinks, etc.) throughout the day.
